We have observed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we grew up with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. The apparent and direct truth that the Jesus in biblical accounts calls for a type of extreme compassion concentrated on the poor is what has always made the Christian faith somewhat of a controversial faith: appealing to the masses, but because of its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. During the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Finest of Us
