Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with guests including members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have supported their local areas.

The large audience will hear a selection of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Centred Around Kindness and Compassion

The theme of the event, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday, is kindness and showing love to others.

Attending the event are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose daughter died of a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, a support fund, to support families who have a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often discreetly and without words, and without any expectation or recognition, make an remarkable change to the circumstances of individuals," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the festive gathering.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The princess has been making her own gradual return to public life subsequent to her illness and medical care, recently giving her first public speech for two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Performance and Potential

Those coming to the Abbey can listen to talented youth performers backed by the Future Talent organisation, co-founded by the former royal to increase availability of music lessons.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been assisted by the organisation, with awards contributing to musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "awesome" to be taking part in tonight's service.

"Music can be very expensive," she stated. She is now studying at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to develop their musical skills.

A Family Affair

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who plays the euphonium, will be present at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Among the guests will be people from various age groups.

That will encompass nine-year-old Saphia Turner, winner of a youth community award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to generate funds for community pantries.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been adorned with custom-created holiday decorations, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett helping to make them.

Among the musical performers will be Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be broadcast on television on December 24th.
