The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's determination was the chance of his "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.

The police took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
