Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using such medications should be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
People who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
